Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2012: Halloween Swoon

Esta es mi entrada para el Blogger's Quilt Festival de otoño 2012: una colcha Super Swoon con telas de Halloween. 

This is my entry for the Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2012: a Halloween Super Swoon quilt. 

Hace unos años me enamoré de esta colección de telas (Trick or Treat de Riley Blake por Doodlebug Design) y con parte de ellas le hice una colcha a mi ahijada. El resto lo reservaba para algo especial. Cuando vi lo que lucían las telas en la colcha Super Swoon que hice para mi amiga Mireia me decidí.

A few years ago I fell in love with this collection of fabrics (Trick or Treat by Doodlebug Design for Riley Blake) and with some of them I made a quilt for my goddaughter. The rest is saved them for something special. When I saw how pretty fabrics looked in the Super Swoon quilt I made for my friend Mireia I decided I should make one for myself using these fabrics.

También usé para el fondo una tela de la colección Quilter's Linen de Robert Kaufman en el color Stone. La tela es muy chula ya que tiene un dibujo que imita el lino pero es 100% algodón.

I also used Quilter's Linen in Stone from Robert Kaufman. The fabric is very cool because it has a design that mimics linen but is 100% cotton.

Para la trasera utilice una tela de la misma colección en tonos grises.
For the backing I used a fabric of the same collection in grey.

Para el acolchado hice líneas rectas como suelo hacer habitualmente y en los bordes líneas rectas formando un cuadrado para "enmarcar" el quilt.

I quilted straight lines as I usually do and in the border I also did straight line but "framing" the quilt.

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Super Swoon

Hacía años que guardaba unas telas de Amy Butler y pensé en utilizarlas para la colcha de 40 cumpleaños de Mireia. Nos conocemos desde que íbamos al colegio, hemos pasado juntas penas y alegrías (este último año más penas que alegrías) y su hija es mi ahijada (y la receptora de la mayoría de cosas que coso). Su color preferido es el lila con lo que sabía que en la colcha que le regalase tenía que predominar ese color.

For years I have been saving/hoarding some Amy Butler fabrics and I thought it was finally the time to use them for Mireia's 40 birthday quilt. We've known each other since school, we have shared joys and sorrows (this last year more sorrows than joys) and her daughter is my goddaughter (and the recipient of most things I make). Her favorite colour is purple so I knew her quilt had to have that colour too.

Finalmente me decidí por el patrón Swoon de Camille Roskelley (me estoy haciendo una para mi siguiéndolo), pero pensé en cambiar el diseño un poco y en vez de hacer una colcha de 9 bloques, hacer una colcha con un bloque super grande: la Super Swoon!

I finally decided on the Swoon pattern by Camille Roskelley (I'm doing one for myself), but I thought about changing the design a bit and instead of making a quilt with 9 blocks, to make a quilt with a large big block: the Super Swoon!

La colcha mide 90 x 90 pulgadas. El bloque en si mide 80 x80 más un borde de 5 pulgadas con los restos que me sobraron de cortar los cuadrados. En cuanto a la construcción de la colcha la cambié un poco respecto al patrón, para mi era más fácil hacer medios cuadrados triángulos (la traducción es difícil: half square triangles o HST) y cuadrados. La verdad es que para mi fue más rápido de esta manera pero ya se sabe cada uno es diferente...

The quilt measures 90 x 90 inches. The block itself measures 80 x 80 plus a 5 inch border with some left overs from cutting the squares. As for the construction of the quilt, I changed it somewhat from the pattern, it was easier to me to use half square triangles and squares. It was faster this way, but you know everyone is different so perhaps someone would prefer to follow the pattern...

Para la trasera utilicé una tela preciosa de Kaffe Fassett (siempre tengo que buscar el nombre en google para ponerlo bien) y acolché en linea recta... por ahora el único tipo de acolchado que se hacer (y me cuesta lo suyo).

I used a beautiful fabric by Kaffe Fassett (if always have to google his name to spell it correctly) for the backing and did some straight line quilting... for now the only type of quilting I know how to do (and it's difficult enough).

La acabe hace meses pero no he podido colgarla hasta ahora porque era un sorpresa y su cumpleaños no es hasta finales de Abril. Le encantó y ya la tiene puesta en la cama. Sinceramente creo que nos ha traido suerte porque al poco de regalarla las dos encontramos trabajo!

I finished it months ago but I couldn't post about it because it was a surprise and her birthday is at the end of April. She loved it and is already using it. To tell you the truth, I think this quilt brought us luck because shortly after I gave it to her we both found a job!

A veces pienso que no coso demasiado o por lo menos todo lo que me gustaría. Preparando las fotos para este post creo que este año no ha estado tan mal...

Sometimes I think I don't sew too much or at least not as much as I wish. Preparing the photos for this post I think this year was'nt too bad...

- bloques piña para Japón: imposible obtener fotografía, son para unas colchas que fueron donadas para las víctimas del terremoto de Japón
- pañuelitos para la cabeza y bolsitas para la guarderia para Ariadna
- bolsitas para pañales y cambiadores para Ariadna
- rollo para guardar las agujas de ganchillo para Mireia (uno de sus regalos de Navidad)

En resumen, que el 2011 ha ido bastante bien , esperemos que el 2012 sea igual o mejor.



There are things I'm missing photos and I'll try to get them:
- Ariadna's quilt: I did for my goddaughter's birth
- Pineapple blocks for Japan: impossible to obtain photographs as they were for some quilts that were donated for Japan's earthquake victims
- Handkerchiefs for the head and bags for daycare for Ariadna
- Bags for keeping nappies and changing mats for Ariadna
- Roll to keep crochet hooks for Mireia (one of her Christmas presents) 

Quizás quisiste decir: bolsas y cambiadores para Ariadna

In sum, 2011 has gone quite well, I hope that 2012 is equal or better.

Quokka Quilts & Fat Quarters Shop

Halloween Fácil / Easy Halloween

Mi ahijada me ha salido muy moderna y ya desde muy pequeña (ahora tiene 21 meses) le encantan las calaveras, el color negro etc... Mi madre me pidió si podía hacerle una colcha de Halloween que seguro que le gustaría.

My goddaughter is very modern and since she was very small (she's 21 months now) she loves skulls, black colour etc... My mother asked me if I could make her a Halloween quilt as she was sure she would like one.

Hacía tiempo que me miraba las telas de la colección Trick or Treat de Riley Blake y cuando vi que había una super oferta en The Fat Quarter Shop (*) no me lo pensé dos veces. Como queríamos dársela rápido compré un panel (es un trozo de tela con varios dibujos de la colección y parece una colcha) que utilicé para la parte de delante y un Rolie Polie (mini jelly roll) de la colección para la trasera y el bies.

I had been eyeing for some time the fabrics in the Trick or Treat collection by Riley Blake and when I saw that there was a super deal on The Fat Quarter Shop (*) I made up my mind. As we wanted to give it to her inmmediately I simply buyed a panel (a piece of fabric with various designs of the collection that already looks like a quilt) that I used for the front and Rolie Polie (mini jelly roll) of the collection for the backing and the bias .

No tuvo mucho secreto, cosi las tiras suficientes para hacer la trasera, dejando 4 aparte para el biés, acolché bastante denso como a 2 cm de distancia con un hilo lila precioso que compré en JMartínez (*) y reseguí algunos dibujos/cuadrados.

It was really easy, I just sew enough strips to make the backing, leaving 4 for the binding, I quilted quite a bit, straight lines at less than 7/8 of an inch with a pretty purple thread I buyed at JMartínez (*) and I also quilted some squares/motifs.

Las fotos son bastante pésimas, ya la habíamos regalado y las hice un día que fui a verlas con el movil. Lo siento, pero es que una vez hechas me pierden las prisas por entregarlas. Ni que decir tiene que la nena está como una loca con la colchita y va para arriba y para abajo con ella...

The photos are pretty bad, but we had already gifted it and I made them with my Iphone one day I was visiting her. I'm sorry, but once I finish a quilt I can't wait to give it. Of course the girl is mad about her Halloween quilt and keeps taking it with her from one room to another...

Blogger's Quilt Festival: Postage Stamp Quilt

Este verano quería hacerle una colcha para la cama de mi madre y me decidí en el diseño al ver el postage stamp quilt along del blog PS I Quilt .
En cuanto a las telas ya tenía un jelly roll que me iba perfecto ya que quería algo tradicional en tonos marrones no muy oscuro, es Faith de Collection for a Cause de Moda. Para combinar quería algo neutro y me decidí por Kona Cotton en Stone.  

This summer I wanted to make a quilt for my mother's bed and I knew what pattern would I use when I saw the postage stamp quilt along from the PS I Quilt blog . 
Regarding the fabrics I already had the perfect jelly roll as I wanted something traditional and in browns but not too dark, it's Faith - Collection for a Cause by Moda. For the solids I wanted something neutral and chose Kona cotton in Stone.

Nunoya

El sábado pasado estuve en Nunoya, una tienda de Barcelona especializada en telas japonesas. No había estado nunca y me encantó. Está en el Carrer de la Palla 6 y tienen un horario muy amplio ya que incluso abren los sábados por la tarde.

 

Tienen de todo, desde telas tradicionales japonesas, prendas ya confeccionadas con sus telas (tenían un vestido precioso en el escaparate) y telas más modernas, entre ellas muchas de Kokka (colecciones de Melody Millar, Echino y Far Far Away de Heather Ross entre otras… ¡que peligro!).

Yo aproveché para comprar una tela para hacerme una bufanda de patchwork, otras para hacerle unos pañuelitos para la cabeza a mi ahijada, y una de Far Far Away porque no pude resistirme. Las telas puedes comprar la medida que necesites y también tienen unas cestas con fat quarters a 4,85€.

En resumen, una tienda fantástica con telas maravillosas a la que volveré.

 

Last Saturday I visited Nunoya, a store in Barcelona specializing in Japanese fabric. I had never been and I loved it. It’s located in the Carrer de la Palla 6 and they have great opening hours as they are even open on Saturday afternoon.

They have everything from traditional Japanese fabrics, garments made ​​with their fabrics ​​(they had a beautiful dress in the shop window) and modern fabrics; including many of Kokka (I spotted collections by Melody Miller, Echino and Far Far Away by Heather Ross among others... so dangerous!).

I took the opportunity to buy some fabric for a patchwork scarf, others to make some head handkerchiefs for my goddaughter, and one Far Far Away fat quarter (they have baskets with fat quarters for 4.85 €) because I could not resist.

In short, a great store with beautiful fabrics to which I will return.
